COVID-19 Update and Timeline

Burley’s Home Care are fully operational during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and we are still providing all of our services to new and existing clients. We are taking extra precautions to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our staff and clients.

Although we have always had stringent health and safety standards in place, below you can find a summary of the additional precautions that we are taking in response to the Government guidance. This is followed by a timeline of the key Government updates and the measures we have put in place in response to these.

Summary of the extra precautions taken by Burley’s Home Care

  • On arrival at a client’s home our carers will wash their hands, and don their PPE gloves and aprons.
  • On departure, they will dispose of all used PPE.
  • Masks will be worn at all times to protect all clients – visors are not used as PHE have stated that these do not provide the level of infection control required to protect our vulnerable service users. Where service users are hard of hearing, we utilise whiteboards.
  • All the families we work with are aware of the rule of six and we only have one to two visitors in the homes that we are providing care to – all relatives and visitors also wash hands on arrival and departure and wear masks at all times. 
  • All carers are updated and follow strict infection control guidelines at all times.
  • Carers report any concerns immediately.
  • In all homes, our carers are only provided by the client with hand soap to use and a disposable towel to dry our hands. 
  • Carers do not take our masks off while in the service users homes, so do not drink or eat during the visit. 
  • All carers will use hand sanitiser.
  • Carers support all service users to keep their homes sanitised and provide support with infection control procedures.
  • Social distancing is not followed as close contact is required with personal care, but masks are worn at all times.
  • Burleys Home Care are committed to protecting all clients and have been COVID safe throughout the pandemic and are vigilant and proactive to our clients at all times.

19th July 2021

Government update:

On this day, a number of the remaining UK COVID restrictions were lifted.

Our response:

Although restrictions are being lifted across the country, we are aware that Home Care settings are a higher risk environment, and therefore need to maintain tougher measures. Therefore, we are still acting cautiously and maintaining social distancing, wearing face coverings, and our carers wear PPE at all times around our clients.

5th January 2021

Government update:

On the 4th January 2021, we entered a third National lockdown in order to curb the spread of COVID-19. These new National restrictions are anticipated to last for at least January and February whilst the vaccination programme gets underway.

Our response:

We are still providing our home care services to clients existing and new. It is especially important that vulnerable people are supported during this time, and so we take our responsibility for providing outstanding care and companionship seriously. In addition to following the precautions outlined previously, our carers also undergo regular COVID testing, and are in the process of getting their coronavirus vaccinations.

2nd December 2020

Government update:

On this date, the second lockdown was lifted and the UK returned to the previously defined Tier system. Dorset and Hampshire were placed into Tier 2.

Our response:

For the majority of our clients, this update saw them move into Tier 2 where previously they may have been in Tier 1. Because of these tighter restrictions, we understand the importance of offering extra support and companionship. Our carers are available and proactively supporting those who need it. We are continuing to take all of the extra precautions outlined previously.

Monday 12 October 2020

Government update:

New Local COVID-19 Alert Levels were announced, meaning that local areas will be categorised within a three-tiered system according to risk. These are ‘medium’, ‘high’, and ‘very high’.

Most of the country, including Dorset, Hampshire and Somerset are in the ‘medium’ alert level. This means that no additional measures will be implemented at this point, but that current restrictions (such as the ‘rule of 6’) will remain in place.

Our response:

It is becoming apparent that the ‘rule of 6’ which limits contact between family members and friends will be in place for the foreseeable future. We endeavour to continue to provide quality home care services to those who may have had their companionship limited because of these measures. 

As part of our home care offering, we can help with safely facilitating exercise, encouraging your loved one to get out into the community if they wish, and of course provide all important companionship. All of these can have huge impacts on mental health during these challenging times, particularly for those whose family may live far away.

Additionally, our team will continue to take the precautions outlined in the above ‘summary’ section.

Saturday 31st October 2020

Government update:

On the 31st October, the Government announced that England would be placed into another national lockdown for 4 weeks from the 5th November, with the aim of reducing transmission of the virus before Christmas. The key difference between this lockdown and the first was that schools would remain open. Most other restrictions were the same.

Our response:

Similarly to the first lockdown, as essential workers, the Burley’s Home Care team are able to continue offering our home care services to clients with strict precautions in place. 

Tuesday 22 September 2020

Government update:

The Prime Minister announced tighter measures to address the rising number of coronavirus cases in England. These measures included:

  • Guidance stating that face coverings and visors should be worn in close contact services. This became law from 24 September.
  • The ‘rule of 6’ limit will continue to be in place.

Our response:

All of our carers wear masks for the entirety of each home visit. Strict hand-washing regimes remain in place, and we ensure that all surfaces are wiped down, and that service users are well on leaving.

Saturday 4th July 2020

Government update:

Lockdown measures continue to ease, with many businesses able to reopen from this day. This includes hairdressers, cafes, restaurants and places of worship.

Our response:

Lockdown has been difficult on everyone, but especially those in higher risk categories that may have had even more limited contact. 

Burley’s Home Care is committed to the wellbeing of all of our clients, and where it is safe to do so, and with their wishes in mind, we are here to support them getting back out into the community.

Whether that means driving them to their hair appointment, accompanying them to church or taking them out for an afternoon tea, we will do our part to ensure that their quality of life is always a priority.

Although measures may be easing, we will continue to help our clients with infection control measures in their own home to insure that, where possible, their homes are safe. Our staff are also still reporting any concerns / symptoms with their own health, and no staff who is at risk will be visiting clients.

Additionally, flu jabs have been carried out for staff and service users.

Monday 23rd March 2020

Government update:

The Prime Minister has announced a stay at home order to reduce contact between people, with the aim of reducing the spread of coronavirus.  There are three key measures in place for this ‘lockdown’: 

  1. Requiring people to stay at home, except for very limited purposes such as outdoor exercise, or for those classed as key workers.
  2. Closing non-essential shops and community spaces.
  3. Stopping all gatherings of more than two people in public.

Our response:

Burley’s home carers are key workers, and are therefore permitted to continue to work through the pandemic as service users need. 

As well as ensuring that all of the hygiene measures mentioned in the above summary are stringently followed, we also understand that it is vital for our service users to remain as social and engaged as possible. 

As such, we are communicating even more frequently with our clients via calls and text messages, and have been setting up video calls between service users and their families to ensure that (where possible), they do not become isolated from loved ones.

We also assist with important tasks such as picking up and delivering prescriptions, ordering and collecting shopping, taking service users to medical appointments, and general errand running.
