Debunking 5 common home care myths
Most of us would prefer to stay in the comfort of our own home when we get older but there are some myths surrounding home care that can prevent people thinking it’s a viable alternative to a residential care home. Our experts debunk some of the most common misconceptions about home care in the hope more people will benefit from this fantastic service.
Myth 1: Home care is too expensive
One of the biggest myths surrounding home care is that it costs so much money that only the very wealthy can afford it. However, this is most certainly not the case with Burley’s. Though we never compromise on the level of care and service we provide, thanks to our experience and compassionate, fully qualified team, we’re able to offer our services for much less than many people first assume.
Myth 2: You’ll get a different carer with each visit
Whist this can be true for some providers, at Burley’s Home Care we carefully match our clients with a carer who complements their personality and needs. This means that when you open the door, you’ll be greeted with a friendly face who knows exactly what is required not because they have read it off a piece of paper, but because they’ve taken the time to get to know you. If there is likely to be a change to this, then we will be sure to let you know in plenty of time.
Myth 3: The local authority chooses home care providers
Many people believe that if you receive funding from your local authority for home care, then you won’t have a say in which company provides the service. However, the 2014 Care Act enables every person who is eligible for funded care, which is known as Direct Payment, the right to choose their own care provider.
Myth 4: If you own your home you won’t be eligible for funding
Another common myth surrounding home care is that if you own your own house, you’ll need to sell it and have spent the profits before you’ll be eligible for Local Authority funding. While it is true Direct Payment is based on a means assessment, if you opt for care at home the fact you own your house will not be taken into account. Please note, the value of your home may be considered if you are moving into a residential care home.
Myth 5: Carers don’t care about me
This is, unfortunately, another common myth not only about home care, but the wider care community. In our experience, many people enter into the care profession because they genuinely want to help people live a better quality of life. At Burley’s Home Care, we ensure that every single one of our carers embody this important value and that they are genuinely kind, caring and respectful.
Based in Dorset and Hampshire, Burley’s Home Care has been rated as one of the top 20 home care providers in the whole of the UK. To discuss your care needs with one of our friendly team, please don’t hesitate to get in touch today on 01425 470411.
