What does a health care assistant do?

  • Preparing meals is important for improving our clients’ quality of life. Whether it’s from scratch or light snacks, providing them with healthy and delicious food is crucial.
  • Medication Support: Receive comprehensive training to assist customers with medical conditions with the safe and appropriate administration of medication.
  • Personal Care: Help customers with washing, bathing, toileting, dressing and maintaining personal hygiene.
  • Running Errands: Support less mobile customers by picking up groceries or handling post office tasks on their behalf.
  • Clinical Care: Collaborate with other healthcare professionals to provide specialised support for customers with complex health conditions.
  • Household Chores: Assist with household tasks such as vacuuming, laundry and cleaning, ensuring a comfortable environment for our customers.
  • Companionship: Make a customer happy by being friendly. You can do this by having tea and cake, going to the gardens, watching TV, or helping them with a puzzle. You can also give another caregiver a break.
  • Pet Care: Caring for customers’ pets by walking them or making sure their water bowls are filled.
 

The Role

To provide a high standard of care to service users to enable and/or assist them to remain within their own home, supporting them to lead as independent a life style as safely as possible.

Helping service users to maintain relationships with neighbours, friends and family  and provide social contact, especially for the service users who live alone.

Assisting other care workers and professionals in providing care for the service user and being the face of ‘care in the community’ and acting as our representative.

This position will involve personal care and household management which is personalised within a care plan for each individual depending on their needs, always ensuring the service user’s rights to privacy and dignity is maintained.

  • To maintain a professional manner, keep and maintain high quality information on record and assessment documents in accordance with the Company’s recording policy and procedures.

 

Job Details.

Involvement and Information

  • To participate as directed in the company’s induction and regular in- service training programmes.
  • To be aware of the company organisational structure.
  • To know how and where to access Company policy and procedures and relevant documentation.
  • To maintain accurate, concise and timely records of the service user care, diary sheets, time sheets and mileage sheets.
  • To participate in staff/ team meetings as directed by the management team.
  • To report back to the management team on any aspect of service user care which he/she feels warrants investigation or urgent action following policy.
  • To participate in the review of a care plan.
  • To visit nominated service users as directed by the care Coordinators and management.

Personal care

  • To assist service users with personal care as detailed in their individual care plan.
  • To assist service users with mobility problems and other physical disabilities including incontinence, using aids and personal equipment.i.e. hoist, assistive technology etc in line with their individual care plans.
  • To assist Service users in dressing and undressing, care of aids and personal equipment such as hearing aids, glasses, dentures, prosthesis, etc.
  • Assist service users in all aspects of personal hygiene, i.e. washing, shaving, showering etc.
  • Assist service users in feeding.
  • Assist service Users to access toilet facilities, emptying commodes and disposal if incontinence materials using agreed health and safety procedures.

             Domestic

  • Where directed, maintain cleanliness of service user’s homes, to meet with health and safety requirements.
  • Where appropriate home facilities are available, launder and iron clothes and/ or bed linen.
  • Undertake essential shopping and payment of bills.
  • Where directed, prepare or reheat meals provided and /or demonstrate to service user.
  • Operate sources of heat for warmth within the home.

Social

  • Actively encourage service users, according to their capabilities, to participate in all aspects of daily living activities.
  • Develop and maintain personal contact with the service users through talking and listening.
  • Provide support as part of a caring team, liaising with informal carers, other agencies or professionals as necessary.

Safeguarding and Safety

  • To understand the arrangements for ensuring that service users are safeguarded against the risk of abuse.
  • To have ability to, in accordance with Company and Local Policies to: identify the potential of abuse, take appropriate preventive measures and respond to allegations of abuse.
  • To report any untoward incidents or accidents to your line manager in accordance with company policy and quality monitoring processes.
  • To identify risk of infection or contamination and alert concerns to your line manager for further assessment.
  • To assist with the general standards of hygiene and cleanliness in accordance with planned care and support.
  • To ensure that as far as reasonably practicable where equipment is provided as part of the care and support plan it is safe and fit for purpose.
  • To assist or administer the service users medication in line with Company policy and procedures.
  • To undertake the appropriate level of training and regular updates to stay abreast of best practice.
  • To adhere to actions identified in Risk Assessments, in accordance with both relevant Company policies and standard legislative Health and Safety requirements and be aware of their responsibility under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.
  • To report any observed faults, defects or damage to the premises, fixtures and fittings or equipment to your line manager.

Suitability of Staffing

  • To inform your line manager if you experience difficulty getting to your scheduled visit at the agreed time.
  • To attend supervisions, annual appraisals and team meetings with the Registered Manager and use this to inform your Personal Development Plan.
  • To attend training with an accredited trainer which is specific to the individual service users needs.

Quality and Management

  • To ensure the Company’s Complaints Policy and Procedures are followed when dealing with any concerns or complaints raised by service users or their carer’s.
  • To keep legible, accurate and detailed records in line with company policy and regulatory requirements.
  • To understand and comply with both Company and legislative requirements regarding confidentiality and data protection.
  • Attend staff meetings, as required, for the dissemination of information about the service, peer support and exchange of ideas.
  • All staff are required to respect the confidential matters that they might learn in their employment. All staff are expected to respect the requirement under the (Data Protection Act 1998)
